Our supervisor arranged to survey the job with the Mercure in advance, prior to operatives arriving on site. At this point, we agreed the most
time effective sequence in which to carry out the work. This was transcribed onto a plan and handed to the team supervisor prior to project start.

Clear RAMS from the outset. We expand RAMS so your team sees exactly how we’ll control risk: access routes, cordons, spotters, exclusion zones, method selection, communications, and weather contingencies.
Method-neutral by design. We default to ground-safe telescopic poles and pure water for reach and speed, then step up to high-access window cleaning (rope access/MEWPs) only when it’s safer or more efficient for specific elevations.

This is especially true when you consider that clogged gutters can be a significant cause of dirty windows in business buildings. So for larger buildings we recommend at least checking your gutters as part of regular window cleaning - avoiding our hard work (and your expense) being undone on the first heavy rainfall.

When gutters stop working efficiently, the overflow not only has the potential to soak the windows underneath them but also to carry much of the dirt and debris down with them, making the effect on your windows even dirtier than the natural accumulation of dirt over a normal year.

Discreet Professionalism

We find all kinds of material when cleaning gutters, not just the leaves and birds nests that you may expect but litter that seems unlikely to reach such heights. One common problem with gutters is plant growth. Not only can plants seed in gutters, or creep into them from brickwork, but they can create substantial root or branch systems. This makes gutter cleaning not just an issue of cleanliness but of the buildings maintenance; the weight from that plant growth can cause strain on (and eventually failure of) gutter fixings.

We always ensure that when cleaning gutters, we do a good job that will last for a season. We also ensure that we do it discreetly and professionally, to spare any blushes that may come from removing the contents.

Regular maintenance is the key to good gutter operation, so we always encourage our clients to book a regular clean. CASE STUDY – VALE FIRST AND MIDDLE SCHOOL

Situated in Findon Valley in Worthing, Vale First and Middle School is a two to three storey building backing onto a heavily wooded embankment. Falling leaves and debris had built up in the gutters over time; in some areas there were established plants growing causing severe disruption to the flow of the gutters. As is often the case with schools, we also found a variety of interesting objects in the gutters such as tennis balls, sponge balls, even teddy bears and pens.

CHALLENGES

As a busy school, it was critical to carry out the planned works during the school holidays; avoiding disruption to the schools activities, and ensuring the safety of students.

There were also a number of delivery challenges due to the nature of the building and the position of the guttering in some areas. During our initial survey we identified that some of the guttering would require use of a cherry picker for access. In some areas – particularly the rear elevation – the debris was heavily solidified and required clearing by hand. In other areas, the height of the guttering was simply out of the reach of our gutter-vac system.

SOLUTIONS

Waterlogging on the flat roof where debris in the gutters had solidified causing water to overflow onto the roof itself. The guttering in this area was deep and wide and was cleared using shovels, afterwards the surface water was brushed down through the gutters.

Well established plants had taken root in the gutters in a court yard area; these were cleared by hand and disposed of. Tennis balls, pens and even teddy bears were found inside the guttering around the playground areas. We were able to remove these safely by hand using the cherry picker for access.

Broken guttering was found in a number of places, our team was able to repair this safely using the cherry picker for access.

Overflowing guttering at the front entrance where the downpipe enters the soak-away was found to be caused by tennis balls becoming lodged at the bottom of the gutter with leaves backed up over the top. Here it was decided the best course of action was to take the guttering apart, a drainage rod was pushed down to dislodge the tennis balls and debris restoring free flow to the trapped water. The gutter was carefully put back together.

OUR RECOMMENDATION

Annual clearance of gutters to prevent build-up of debris. This should take place ideally during the winter months after the autumnal leaves have fallen.

Installation of gutter balloons, in particular in the areas where children’s toys were found.

Due to these complexities, we selected a team with the appropriate experience and IPAF qualifications to ensure the work would be carried out competently and safely.

Why Heritage Hotels Need Specialist Building Contractors

Grade II listed buildings come with strict planning constraints. Every repair, coating, and access method must be approved by the local conservation officer before work begins. Restoring the Listed Ornate Archway

The ornate stucco archway at the rear of the hotel had not been painted or maintained for years — partly due to the difficulty of access and the precision required for the repairs. The archway sits in a narrow mews flanked by residential properties, with fire escapes that had to remain fully operational throughout the works.

Our team designed a bespoke scaffolding solution that provided full access to the underside and sides of the arch while maintaining 24-hour pedestrian and emergency access. We stripped back failed paint finishes, raked out cracked joints, removed loose render, and rebuilt damaged sections using a proprietary cement-based external grade repair system.

Colour matching was carried out on a test patch and approved by the local conservation officer before full application. The final coats used a BBA-certified, high-performance matt masonry coating designed for heritage substrates.

High-Level Roof and Rainwater Repairs

The fifth and sixth floor roof areas required lead replacement and the renewal of a cracked patent glazed screen. We used a long-reach cherry picker to access these elevations safely, scheduling lifts around weather windows during what turned out to be one of the worst winters on record.

All rainwater downpipes on the affected elevations were replaced, restoring proper drainage and eliminating the risk of water ingress to the building fabric — a serious concern on any listed structure of this age.

Working on a Live Hotel Site

The Mercure Brighton runs year-round with tourists, business events, weddings, and conferences. Every element of our programme was scheduled around the hotel's operations. The site supervisor held regular briefings with hotel management and consulted with neighbouring mews residents to minimise disruption.

Why Premium Dealerships Need Specialist Contract Cleaners

Car dealerships — particularly premium marques like BMW — set a high bar for cleanliness. Customers visiting a showroom expect the same attention to detail in the environment as they do in the vehicles. Why University Campuses Need Specialist Window Cleaners

University buildings present unique challenges for window cleaning contractors. The Eastbourne campus includes older properties with delicate period windows that require careful handling, buildings with awkward roof aspects that put certain windows beyond the reach of traditional ladder cleaning, and sites scattered across different locations rather than concentrated on a single campus.

Previous attempts to clean the harder-to-reach windows using scaffolding had proven too expensive, meaning some windows simply went uncleaned. “Using our client centric CRM our Operations team build up detailed Job templates relating to all jobs previously delivered to a customers site. Within these templates we build a full picture of each site and job, including info such as:

past job surveys
detailed job specs
photos of the site/job
any supervisor job notes input by supervisors on previous cleans to ensure continuation and handover of information
names of staff experienced on the specific job and site
safety information within both our site surveys and NEBOSH qualified RAMS
delivery logistics such as timescales and order of works
resources such as staffing, plant and equipment needed
any bespoke forms that should be completed by the supervisor at the end of each job specific to the customer and site

Astound Rewards 4 Schools Continues!!

We’re very pleased to announce that following the success of our AstoundRewards 4 Schools programme over the winter months, we will continue the Rewards Credit programme indefinitely.

Here’s how it works…every 6 months (on the 31st of March & 30th September) we will calculate the invoice total of services provided to your education organisation, 10% of this total will be awarded to you in AstoundRewards credit to use against any services during the following 6 month period.

Here’s an example: if you spent £1500 in window cleaning and £900 on gutter cleaning in the month of December totalling £2400. On the 1st of April you will be entitled to use £240 in AstoundRewards credit against any services delivered during the summer months April through September.

This gives you a fantastic opportunity to build credit during two key periods, Winter & Summer. You will be able to apply your AstoundRewards credit from the previous six months to the following six months against any of our services and so on. How Often Should Gutters Be Cleaned in the UK?

Solar Panel Cleaning Certification

We have been cleaning Solar Panels for some years now and it’s a growing area of work for us as they become more popular for business and domestic premises alike. A couple of weeks ago we attended certification training to ensure that we continue to offer excellent service in this area. As well as some of our team, I also attended and passed the training.

Many businesses are considering Solar Panels as a way off reducing their energy bill or reducing their carbon footprint. Solar Panels are an excellent renewable, green energy. And the technology is improving constantly. However, it is really important to keep them in tip-top clean condition for one simple reason; dirt gets in the way of sunlight and less sunlight means less energy. If your Solar Panels aren’t cleaned regularly, you will be loosing the benefit of your investment. Less energy will be generated and less benefit will be felt on your investment.

There are many cleaning companies out there now offering regular solar panel cleaning and making claims of up to 50% increase in productivity but all of these are without any proven statistics at all. The panels do require cleaning for maximum productivity as bird dropping and algae will block the light reaching the cells and lower the output of the panels, so cleaning them from time to time is a good idea to keep them working efficiently. We recommend one clean per year for all installations but some Solar Panels are more exposed than others, so need more regular cleaning.
